Fire Extinguishers

In practically every workplace it is a legal obligation to provide a means of fighting fire and to ensure adequate maintenance. This requirement may even be imposed by an insurance company as a condition of insurance for your business. Portable fire fighting extinguishers are used to deal with small fires as they start.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TESTNG AND MAINTENANCE

To comply with The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires all employers to carry out a risk assessment of there workplace in order to identify, reduce or eliminate any Fire Hazards that that may be found. This is a legal requirement.

It required by law that employers should allocate a member of staff to deal with health and safety issues this includes fire extinguishers and servicing. it is recommended fire extinguishers are serviced on a yearly basis. Please telephone for prices.

Types of extinguisher

WATER

Works mainly by cooling burning material.

Best for wood , cloth, paper, plastics, coal, etc. fire involving solids.

Not used on burning fat or oil or on to electrical appliances.

Point the jet at the base of the flames and keep it moving across the area of the fire

Ensure that all the areas of fire are out

AFFF

(Aqueous Film-Forming Foam)

(Multi- pur pose)

Works by forming a fire extinguishing film on the surface of a burning liquid. It has a cooling action with a wider extinguishing application than water on solid combustible materials. Best for wood, cloth, paper plastics, coals etc. fires involving solids. Liquids such as grease, oils, paint, petrol (except chip or fat pan fires).

For fires involving solids, point the jet at the base of the flames and keep it moving across the area of the f ire. Ensure that all areas of the fire are out. For fires involving liquids do not aim the jet straight into the liquid. Where the liquid on fire is in a container, point the jet at the inside edge of the container or on a nearby surface above the burning liquid,Allow the foam to build up and flow across the liquid.

Carbon Dioxide C02

Works by smothering the flames by displacing the oxygen in the air.

Best for liquids such as grease, fats, oils, paint, petrol etc. (except chip or fat pan fires). Clean, effective and safe on live electrical equipment.

This type of extinguisher does not cool the fire very well and you need to watch that the fire does not start up again. Gas from C02 extinguishers can be harmful if used in confined spaces as it displaces oxygen in the air . Ventilate the area as soon as the fire has been extinguished. The discharge horn should be directed at the base of the fire

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FOR THE HOME

All new portable fire extinguishers are now coloured red and some have a zone of colour

which ind icates the contents of the extinguisher. This colour indication appears on the

front of the extinguisher and above the operating instructions.

All new portable fire extinguishers should conform to the appropriate British Standards (BWS EN 3 and BS: 7863).

(It should be noted, however, that the existing fire extinguishers on which the entire body is coloured coded remain acceptable until such time as they need to be replaced).

Should a fire be discovered in its very early stages you may think that you can deal with it yourself. The first thing to remember is that even small fires spread very quickly, producing smoke and fumes which can kill in seconds. If you are in any doubt, do not tackle the fire, no matter how small it is.

Remember if in doubt

Always call the Fire Brigade even if you have managed to put the fire out. They are the

experts and will make sure that the fire has been properly extinguished.
